A 19-year-old man, Alexandros Paporakis, was arrested for allegedly planning a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois. Police reports indicate that Paporakis, who works at a Taco Bell in Palatine, had driven to the temple with the intention of killing a significant number of Indian worshippers. On Sunday, he attempted to fire his weapon, but a malfunction forced him to return home instead.
Investigators revealed that Paporakis had been preparing for the attack, having modified an AR-style rifle and amassed 300 rounds of ammunition. During a search of his residence, authorities discovered not only the weaponry but also body armor, gasoline cans, and a manifesto expressing his violent ideologies, which included hatred towards various racial and ethnic groups.
The plot was uncovered when one of Paporakis's coworkers reported his intentions to law enforcement. This timely alert led to his arrest before he could return to the temple. The coworker recalled Paporakis mentioning that Sunday would be a "special day" and later informed them about his gun malfunction, indicating his urgency to carry out the attack.
In response to the threat, the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple, the largest Hindu temple in Aurora, has heightened security measures. Temple authorities emphasized their commitment to the safety of their community, stating that additional armed security would be present from 9 AM to 9 PM to ensure a secure environment for devotees.
Paporakis now faces multiple charges, including making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a firearm. As investigations continue, the community remains vigilant and supportive of enhanced security protocols at the temple, ensuring the safety of all worshippers.
