The Supreme Court has filed a contempt petition against the Kerala Congress for a controversial social media post targeting Chief Justice Surya Kant.
The Supreme Court registered a contempt petition on October 30, 2026.
The Kerala Congress's post on social media drew widespread criticism before its deletion.
KPCC president confirmed the removal of the individual responsible for the post.
The Supreme Court of India has taken significant action by filing a contempt petition against the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) due to a social media post that targeted Chief Justice Surya Kant. This legal move follows a complaint lodged by advocate Vineet Jindal on October 13, which was subsequently registered as a writ petition on October 30, 2026.
The controversy erupted after a post from the official Kerala Congress account on 'X' went viral on October 12, coinciding with a political demonstration that involved prominent leaders like Rahul Gandhi. The post was met with intense backlash on social media, leading to its removal shortly thereafter. The KPCC has stated that the post was made without the approval or knowledge of its leadership, emphasizing that the party stands by the judiciary's impartiality.
In addition to the contempt proceedings, the complaint also requested the court to investigate whether the political demonstration held on the Supreme Court premises on October 12 was authorized. The demonstration reportedly involved slogan-shouting and may have obstructed the movement of legal professionals and court staff.
KPCC president Sunny Joseph addressed the issue, confirming that the individual responsible for the controversial post has been removed from their position. He reiterated that the Congress party does not dispute the integrity of the judiciary and expressed regret over the incident.
Looking ahead, the Supreme Court's actions could set a precedent for how political parties engage with judicial figures on social media. The KPCC's response and any further legal developments will be closely monitored as this situation unfolds, highlighting the ongoing tension between political expression and judicial respect in India.
