The attack, described by authorities as a possible hate crime, has raised concerns about rising tensions in the region. The incident unfolded quickly, with a 39-year-old male suspect apprehended shortly after the shooting, which took place in public areas including a children's playground and a medical center.
The Interior Minister, Laurent Nunez, reported that the gunman used what appeared to be a military-grade weapon during the attack, which lasted less than 15 minutes. Three of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries, and the authorities are investigating the motives behind the shooting, focusing on whether it was racially or religiously motivated. The Elysee Palace has labeled the incident a "racist, terrorist attack," reflecting the gravity of the situation.
Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh expressed his horror at the attack, stating that the gunman seemed intent on causing mass harm. In response to the incident, President Macron visited Trappes and emphasized that national antiterrorism prosecutors have taken over the investigation, which includes examining the suspect's background and motives. The suspect had reportedly booby-trapped his apartment with gas canisters connected to a timer, indicating premeditation. As the investigation continues, security measures are being heightened across France in anticipation of planned protests over the weekend. With 70,000 officers deployed, the government aims to maintain order following recent unrest. The upcoming demonstrations are expected to draw significant attention, as various groups rally against the rising cost of living and other social issues, further complicating the national atmosphere following this tragic event.
