A shooting incident at a Greek Orthodox Church in the village of Hamoud, located in Jordan's Karak governorate, has resulted in the deaths of at least seven people and injuries to 34 others. The attack occurred during a funeral procession on October 23, 2026, when two masked gunmen opened fire on attendees, creating chaos and panic among mourners.
According to Obaidullah Al-Maaytah, the director of Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, the assault began with an explosion as the funeral procession commenced. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen entered the church and fired indiscriminately for several minutes. Security forces quickly responded to the scene and are actively searching for the suspects, who reportedly fled in a vehicle after the attack.
Among the injured, 27 individuals were hospitalized for treatment, highlighting the severity of the situation. Al-Maaytah assured the public that the authorities are committed to capturing the perpetrators, emphasizing that national unity would not be compromised by this act of violence. The attack has not yet been claimed by any group, but Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya described it as an unprecedented act of terrorism.
This incident marks a significant escalation in violence within Jordan, a country known for its relative stability and interfaith coexistence. The Christian community, which constitutes a minority in Jordan, has historically lived peacefully alongside Muslims. The attack has raised concerns about the potential for sectarian division, but analysts suggest that it may also strengthen community bonds.
Looking ahead, Jordan's leadership, including King Abdullah II, has vowed to respond decisively to this attack. The king stated that the blood of Jordanians is precious and promised to impose the harshest penalties on those responsible. As investigations continue, the government is likely to enhance security measures to prevent further incidents and reassure the public of their safety.
