Sensex Surges Over 1,200 Points Amid IT Sector Gains
The Sensex rebounded significantly, climbing over 1,200 points, driven by strong performances in IT and banking stocks.
Sensex reached 73,988, while Nifty traded above 22,950.
Key factors for the rise include gains in IT stocks and a retreat in oil prices.
The Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar, contributing to market optimism.
In a remarkable recovery, the Sensex surged over 1,200 points on Thursday, reaching 73,988, while the Nifty crossed the 22,950 mark. This rebound followed a decline the previous day and was primarily fueled by gains in the IT, banking, and consumer sectors, which bolstered investor sentiment on Dalal Street. However, despite the overall positive movement, volatility increased, with the India VIX rising by over 1%.
The backdrop to this market surge includes a notable performance from IT stocks, which have rallied for three consecutive sessions. Major players like TCS, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra saw significant gains, attributed to improved earnings reports and a selloff in AI-related stocks. This trend comes amidst a backdrop of declining Asian markets, where the MSCI index fell by 1.2%, influenced by rising US consumer inflation that has led to speculation about potential Federal Reserve actions.
Key contributors to the market's upward trajectory include a retreat in oil prices, which fell by more than $1 due to concerns over supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude futures dropped to $104 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) fell to $94.07. Additionally, the Indian rupee opened stronger at 94.92 against the US dollar, further enhancing market confidence. Analysts suggest that the dollar's bearish momentum could lead to continued strength in the rupee, which is viewed positively by investors.
The market's dynamics are also influenced by the upcoming weekly expiry for the Sensex on October 15, which often leads to increased volatility as traders adjust their positions. This could result in sharp swings in the index, depending on whether traders engage in short covering or fresh selling. Technical analysts indicate that the market is currently positioned to challenge resistance levels between 22,550 and 22,787, with a failure to maintain above these levels potentially exposing lower support levels.
Looking ahead, market participants will be closely monitoring upcoming earnings reports, particularly from financial sectors, which are expected to provide further resilience to the market. The interplay of global economic indicators and local market conditions will be crucial in determining the direction of the Sensex and Nifty in the coming days.
