SEBI Revises Closing Auction Session Framework Effective December 2026
The Securities and Exchange Board of India updates trading timings and settlement methodologies for derivatives, impacting major capital market stocks.
SEBI's new framework introduces a 10-minute closing auction from 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM.
Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) will now determine settlement prices for expiring derivatives contracts.
Capital market stocks, including BSE and NSE, experienced mixed reactions following the announcement.
On October 16, 2026, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced significant changes to the Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework, which will take effect on December 7, 2026. The revised framework includes a new 10-minute closing auction session from 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM, while trading in index and stock derivatives will continue until 3:45 PM, with some exceptions for expiring contracts.
The revisions come after a thorough review process that considered public feedback and recommendations from SEBI's Secondary Market Advisory Committee. A notable change is the reinstatement of the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) methodology, which will be used to settle expiring derivatives contracts based on the last 30 minutes of trading. This adjustment aims to enhance the accuracy of settlement prices and improve market efficiency.
The impact of these changes is particularly relevant for major players in the capital markets, including BSE Ltd, National Stock Exchange (NSE), and various brokerage firms like Nuvama Wealth Management and Angel One. While the new framework is expected to benefit derivatives traders, the overall effect on the earnings of exchanges and brokers will depend on how these changes influence trading volumes and market participation.
Despite the positive outlook for derivatives trading, the immediate market reaction was mixed. As of October 16, the NIFTY Capital Markets index fell by 1.21%, with BSE shares declining by 2.35% and Angel One by 3%. In contrast, Groww's stock rose by 1.45%, indicating varied investor responses to the new regulations.
Looking ahead, the transition provisions for unexecuted limit and iceberg orders will be implemented starting February 8, 2027. Market participants will be closely monitoring how these changes unfold and their implications for trading strategies and market dynamics in the coming months.
