Saudi Coalition Intercepts Houthi Missiles Amid Regional Talks
The Saudi-led coalition claims to have thwarted multiple Houthi missile and drone attacks as diplomatic discussions unfold in Tehran.
The coalition intercepted three ballistic missiles and four drones aimed at Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province.
Emergency alerts were issued in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province and Al Kharj governorate prior to the interceptions.
Diplomatic talks involving Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Pakistan, and Iran are aimed at de-escalating regional tensions.
In a significant development, the Saudi-led coalition announced on Tuesday that it successfully intercepted three ballistic missiles and four drones launched by Houthi forces targeting the kingdom. Major-General Turki al-Maliki, the coalition's spokesperson, confirmed that the missiles were directed towards the Eastern Province, but fortunately, there were no reported casualties. The drones were reportedly aimed at southern regions of Saudi Arabia.
This interception occurred against the backdrop of high-level diplomatic meetings taking place in Tehran, where officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Pakistan, and Iran convened to address escalating regional conflicts. The discussions were prompted by a resurgence of hostilities following the U.S. and Israel's military actions against Iran that began in February, which have reignited tensions in Yemen.
Prior to the missile interceptions, Saudi Arabia's Civil Defence agency had issued emergency alerts in the Eastern Province and Al Kharj governorate, advising residents to avoid crowds and report emergencies. Following the interception, the agency lifted the alerts but continued to emphasize caution among the populace. Additionally, the coalition reported the destruction of three drones in the Riyadh and southern regions the previous evening.
The ongoing conflict has seen the Houthis intensifying their attacks, including strikes on Saudi airports and oil facilities. A recent attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh resulted in at least 13 fatalities and over 300 injuries, marking one of the deadliest assaults on the kingdom in recent years. In retaliation, the Saudi-led coalition has conducted strikes targeting Houthi missile facilities, including tunnels and launchers.
Looking ahead, the coalition's military operations and diplomatic efforts are expected to continue as the situation remains volatile. The discussions in Tehran aim to establish channels for negotiation to prevent further military escalation, with the involvement of key regional players. The outcomes of these talks could significantly influence the trajectory of the conflict in Yemen and the broader Middle East region.
