Ladakh's administrative landscape expands with the establishment of Sankoo as its eighth district, enhancing public service delivery.
Sankoo became the eighth district of Ladakh on October 16, 2026.
The creation aims to decentralize administration and improve services.
Ladakh now has eight districts, up from two prior to 2026.
On October 16, 2026, Sankoo was officially designated as the eighth district of Ladakh, as announced by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. This new district is situated in the Suru Valley region of Kargil district and aims to enhance administrative efficiency and public service delivery, particularly in remote areas.
Prior to the establishment of Sankoo, Ladakh was divided into two districts: Leh and Kargil. The administrative landscape began to change on April 27, 2026, when five new districts—Sham, Nubra, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass—were approved. The addition of Sankoo brings the total number of districts to eight, fulfilling a long-held aspiration of the local population. Organizations such as Anjuman-e-Sahib Zaman played a significant role in advocating for this change, with leadership from figures like Syed Mohammad Razvi and Sheikh Sadiq Balaghi.
Ladakh's transition to a Union Territory on October 31, 2019, marked a significant shift in its administrative structure, following the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act. As a Union Territory without a Legislative Assembly, Ladakh is governed by a Lieutenant Governor appointed by the President of India. The establishment of districts is crucial for delivering government services and managing local administration, especially given the region's challenging high-altitude terrain and dispersed settlements.
With the addition of Sankoo, Ladakh's district structure now includes Leh, Kargil, Sham, Nubra, Changthang, Zanskar, Drass, and Sankoo. This expansion reflects a commitment to decentralizing governance and improving service delivery in remote areas, aligning with the vision of inclusive development articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Looking ahead, the focus will be on implementing effective administrative strategies in the newly formed district to ensure that the needs of the local population are met. The ongoing development of infrastructure and public services in Sankoo will be closely monitored as part of the broader effort to enhance governance across Ladakh.
