On October 23, a significant protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is set to take place, featuring noted economist Parakala Prabhakar alongside Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and actor-activist Prakash Raj. This nationwide demonstration, organized by the People Against SIR alliance, aims to unite various activists, political leaders, and public figures to call for the cancellation of the SIR and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The SIR exercise has drawn criticism for allegedly leading to the mass deletion of eligible voters, particularly from marginalized communities. The People Against SIR alliance, formed on October 14, is mobilizing support from diverse groups, including students, farmers, and minorities, to highlight the impact of the SIR on democratic participation. Prabhakar, known for his critical stance on government policies, emphasized the need for citizens to rise against this issue, stating, "Har gali mein Jantar Mantar!" in a recent tweet.
Prabhakar's participation is expected to enhance the visibility of the protest, especially given his history of political involvement and criticism of the ruling party. He previously served as a communications adviser to the Andhra Pradesh government and has been vocal about issues such as unemployment and the erosion of democratic institutions in his writings. His alliance with Dipke and Raj, both prominent figures in their respective fields, is likely to draw more attention to the protest.
The alliance has urged citizens to organize local protests and create "Jantar Mantars" in their neighborhoods, reflecting a grassroots approach to mobilization. This call comes in light of recent restrictions placed on Jantar Mantar as a protest site by the Delhi Police, which has heightened tensions surrounding the SIR exercise. The alliance aims to leverage this moment to galvanize support and raise awareness about the implications of the SIR on electoral integrity.
As the protest date approaches, the People Against SIR alliance is focused on building momentum, particularly as the INDIA bloc and CJP have paused their protests. The outcome of the October 23 demonstration could significantly influence public discourse surrounding the electoral revision process and the broader political landscape in India, especially in light of recent controversies involving Gyanesh Kumar and the electoral commission.
