This incident marks the second police encounter of a rape suspect in West Bengal in three months.

In a dramatic turn of events, a 23-year-old man named Prahlad Das, who was accused of raping and murdering a 17-year-old girl in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, was killed in a police encounter on the night of October 26. The encounter occurred during a reconstruction of the crime scene when Das reportedly snatched a service revolver from a police officer and opened fire, prompting officers to retaliate in self-defense.
Das had been taken to the crime scene in Gaighata following his arrest for the alleged crime. According to police reports, he managed to seize the firearm from an escorting officer, leading to a chaotic exchange of gunfire. The police responded swiftly, injuring Das, who was later transported to Chandpara Rural Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have initiated an investigation into how the accused was able to disarm a police officer during the reconstruction.
The incident has sparked significant tension in the area, with Das's family expressing outrage over his death. Following the news, a large police presence was deployed at the hospital and surrounding areas to maintain order. This encounter is notably the second incident of its kind in West Bengal within three months, following the police shooting of another rape and murder suspect in July.
The parents of the victim expressed a mix of relief and sorrow. The girl's father remarked on the futility of seeking justice, stating, "Will I ever get my daughter back?" His sentiments were echoed by the victim's mother, who described the news of Das's death as a positive outcome, given the circumstances surrounding her daughter's tragic end. They had reported that the girl had gone missing after attending a cultural event, and her body was discovered the following morning.
West Bengal's Panchayat Minister Dilip Ghosh defended the police's actions, asserting that those who defy the law must face consequences. He emphasized the necessity of police encounters to restore public trust in law enforcement, stating that similar incidents have occurred in the past. As investigations continue, the community remains on edge, grappling with the implications of this encounter and the broader issues of safety and justice in the region.
