Paris Enforces Overnight Curfew Amid Ongoing Protests
In response to escalating violence, Paris police have implemented a curfew in key areas following severe riots over the weekend.
An overnight curfew is imposed in Paris from 11 PM to 6 AM.
The curfew targets the Place de la République and Les Halles shopping area.
Local authorities in northern France have also enacted curfews for minors.
In an effort to curb escalating violence during ongoing protests, Paris police have instituted an overnight curfew in two critical areas of the city. The curfew, effective from 11 PM on Monday, October 19, 2026, until 6 AM the following day, aims to safeguard both individuals and property following a weekend marked by significant unrest and looting.
The areas affected by the curfew include the Place de la République, where rioting occurred on Saturday, October 17, and the Les Halles shopping district, which has seen extensive looting. In addition to the curfew, the police have prohibited gatherings and demonstrations after 8 PM, reflecting a heightened security response to the recent disturbances.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, addressing the situation earlier on Monday, emphasized the need for “very limited” and “localized” curfews. He highlighted that, despite the severe violence and property damage witnessed, no fatalities occurred, which he described as a miracle. Further details regarding the curfews are expected to be released after consultations with local mayors later in the day.
The unrest in Paris echoes previous incidents of violence during mass protests, where peaceful demonstrations have often been marred by clashes with law enforcement. This recent wave of riots has drawn comparisons to the violent protests that erupted in 2023 following the police shooting of a teenager, which also led to the imposition of local curfews. Additionally, the ongoing turmoil is reminiscent of the yellow vest protests that began in 2018, driven by public discontent over fuel prices and economic issues.
Looking ahead, authorities are likely to continue monitoring the situation closely, with additional measures possible to maintain order. The curfews, particularly in Paris and northern cities like Lille, reflect a broader strategy to mitigate violence and protect public safety amid rising tensions across France.
