Uttar Pradesh election officials have revealed alarming discrepancies in over 10,000 voter registrations in the Pilibhit Assembly constituency. Following an investigation, two electoral registration officers and a computer assistant have been suspended due to their involvement in the irregularities. The Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh, Navdeep Rinwa, confirmed the findings on Thursday, emphasizing the need for accountability in the electoral process.
The inquiry, which scrutinized voter registration activities from May 31 to August 29, 2026, uncovered that a computer assistant at the Voter Registration Centre had processed 13,779 applications for changes in voter details. Out of these, 10,470 were approved, while 3,309 were rejected. Alarmingly, no supporting documentation for these entries was found, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the voter registration process.
In response to the findings, legal actions have been initiated against the involved officials under the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Additionally, departmental proceedings are underway against the two electoral registration officers who were responsible for the voter list during the period in question. The District Magistrate of Pilibhit, Alok Kumar, stated that further inquiries are being conducted into the roles of Sub-Divisional Magistrates involved in the voter registration process.
The situation has sparked political controversy, with the Congress party alleging that 13,150 voters in the Pilibhit Sadar constituency had identical Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers, despite differing names and parental details. The Samajwadi Party has echoed these concerns, prompting the election authorities to conduct a thorough examination of all voter registration applications submitted during the specified timeframe.
Looking ahead, the election authorities have mandated a comprehensive review of all Form-6 and Form-7 applications related to voter registrations processed by the computer assistant. A report detailing the findings is expected within a day, as officials work to rectify the irregular entries in compliance with established norms. This incident underscores the critical importance of maintaining the integrity of electoral processes in Uttar Pradesh and ensuring that all voters are accurately represented.
