In a dramatic escalation of civil unrest, over 1,200 arrests were made during nationwide protests in France on Saturday, as demonstrators expressed their outrage over increasing living costs and declining public services. The protests, which erupted in Paris and other cities, saw violent clashes between police and protesters, resulting in significant damage to shops and public buildings.

The unrest was fueled by a coalition of groups, including students protesting against poor school conditions and allegations of excessive police force. Law enforcement responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds of masked demonstrators, leading to fires being set in public buildings, including a town hall in Limoges, where part of the structure collapsed. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported that 60 police officers were injured during the confrontations, with two requiring hospitalization due to severe injuries.

In a statement on social media, President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence and pledged to hold those responsible accountable. He emphasized that attacks on public institutions would not be tolerated and vowed that perpetrators would face prosecution. Macron also expressed his support for law enforcement, highlighting their role in maintaining the right to peaceful protest while denouncing those he described as “sowers of chaos.”

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu echoed Macron’s sentiments, attributing the violence to “ultraleft groups” and opportunistic individuals. He stated that the government would not permit political agendas to be imposed through violence and backed a proposed bill aimed at making perpetrators financially responsible for the damage caused during the riots. Lecornu stressed the importance of public funds being allocated to essential services rather than repairs for vandalism.

The protests, which saw participation from an estimated 550,000 individuals according to the CGT trade union, were marked by both violence and peaceful demonstrations. While some protesters engaged in looting and arson, many others marched peacefully, demanding higher wages and better public services. The unrest reflects growing frustration with the government's handling of economic issues as France approaches its next presidential election.
