A devastating incident unfolded at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday when 16-year-old Griffin J. John II opened fire in a special needs classroom, leading to the deaths of three children and a teacher. The shooting occurred after John allegedly forced his way into the school with a shotgun that had been bought by his mother. The police reported that the victims included three children aged five, eight, and eleven, along with 25-year-old teacher Meghan Lambert. Additionally, a seven-year-old child in a wheelchair and a 54-year-old teacher sustained injuries during the attack.
The attack was marked by chaos as John fired approximately 15 rounds from a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun. Authorities confirmed that all four fatalities occurred in the same classroom, which John had attended as a special needs student. Investigators are currently probing the motive behind the shooting and how John acquired the firearm, with reports indicating he had around 44 rounds remaining when he was stopped.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that John initially attempted to enter the school through the front door but was thwarted by two bystanders, including a father who noticed the situation while driving by. This father, armed with a concealed weapon, intervened and shot at John, disrupting his entry. John then circumvented to the back of the building, forced open a locked door, and proceeded to his former classroom where he opened fire. A teacher bravely confronted John, throwing her phone at him and engaging in a physical struggle to disarm him, though she was unharmed in the process.
In the aftermath of the shooting, school district officials announced an investigation into the emergency response protocols. Steve Cook, a district official, noted that students participate in lockdown drills twice a year, with the most recent drill occurring just two weeks prior to the incident. The community is now grappling with the implications of the tragedy, as parents and students seek answers about the safety measures in place.
Griffin's mother, Shauntai Nickerson, expressed her devastation outside her apartment, stating her sorrow over the attack and her son’s actions. She described him as a “good boy” and lamented the loss of the victims. Meanwhile, the family of teacher Meghan Lambert remembered her as a dedicated educator who had dreamed of working with children. As investigations continue, the community remains in mourning, searching for understanding and healing in the wake of this senseless violence.
