An investigation uncovers a suicide attack plot by an Omani co-pilot on a Flydubai flight to Tel Aviv, thwarted by the captain.
The Omani co-pilot aimed to crash a flight into Israel's Ben Gurion Airport.
The plan was interrupted by the Indian captain, Smit Machchhar.
The suspect had a history of extremism dating back to 2017.
An alarming incident involving a Flydubai flight has come to light, where an Omani co-pilot allegedly plotted to crash the aircraft into Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. The United Arab Emirates' Attorney General, Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, disclosed these details during a press briefing on Friday, following an investigation that commenced on October 1. The incident occurred on September 30, involving flight FZ1073, and the co-pilot's intentions were reportedly inspired by the September 11 attacks in the United States.
The investigation revealed that the co-pilot's plan was thwarted by the quick actions of the aircraft's captain, Smit Machchhar, who prevented the co-pilot from taking control of the plane. According to reports from the UAE state news agency WAM, the suspect had previously taken two flights to Tel Aviv to familiarize himself with the route and airport layout, indicating a premeditated approach to the attack.
The 29-year-old suspect, identified as Hamam al-Hammami, allegedly aimed to inflict maximum casualties during the planned attack. The situation escalated when the co-pilot reportedly assaulted Captain Machchhar with an emergency axe, leading to a dramatic descent of 16,000 feet within just 30 seconds before the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. The UAE authorities have characterized the incident as a serious threat to aviation security.
Al Shamsi noted that the suspect had a diverse employment history with various airlines, including Oman Air and Royal Air Maroc, before joining Flydubai in January 2026. Investigators also discovered that al-Hammami's radicalization began in 2017 while he was studying in Australia, suggesting a long-term shift towards extremism. Earlier reports indicated that he had expressed intentions to execute a similar attack on a previous flight to Tel Aviv but ultimately did not follow through.
As the investigation continues, officials are analyzing the implications of this incident for aviation security in the region. The UAE's proactive measures in addressing such threats highlight the ongoing need for vigilance in air travel. Future developments are expected as authorities delve deeper into the suspect's background and motivations, with a focus on preventing similar plots in the future.
