The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) has expressed dissatisfaction regarding the attention given to Neha Bora, president of the All India Students' Association (AISA), during recent Congress events. This discontent was highlighted when a disgruntled NSUI member renamed an official WhatsApp group to 'WE THE Chhotu', a term implying 'small' or 'errand-runner' in Hindi. The name change lasted three days and was reverted only after NSUI leaders met with Rahul Gandhi to discuss their grievances.
On October 12, during a march to the Supreme Court addressing alleged electoral fraud, Bora was notably positioned alongside Rahul Gandhi, drawing attention as one of the two women in the forefront. This visibility, which included her presence on a bus with senior leaders and later on a truck during protests, did not sit well with NSUI members, who felt overshadowed by a leader from a rival organization while they were actively participating in the party's protests.
Sources indicate that the NSUI leadership, including national president Vinod Jakhar, felt their efforts were being overlooked as Bora became a central figure in the protests. This sentiment was echoed in their internal communications, where members questioned their roles and expressed frustration over Bora's prominence despite their contributions to the party's activities.
The relationship between Congress and AISA is complex, as both often collaborate despite being competitors in student elections. Bora's rise as a youth leader, particularly following her hunger strike during a significant protest, has further complicated the dynamics within the party. NSUI leaders have voiced their concerns about being sidelined while another organization takes center stage, which they believe undermines their efforts.
In the wake of these tensions, a meeting with Rahul Gandhi was arranged to address the NSUI's concerns. Although no direct complaints were made during the meeting, NSUI members reportedly felt reassured by Gandhi's leadership. The group name was changed back to its original title after this interaction, indicating a temporary resolution. However, the underlying issues regarding representation and recognition within the party remain a point of contention as the Congress navigates its strategies leading up to future elections.
