Jio Platforms' IPO aims to raise Rs 30,213 crore, marking it as India's largest IPO.
Nithin Kamath, the co-founder and CEO of Zerodha, has acknowledged the significant influence of Reliance Jio in transforming the landscape of Indian investing. Speaking on the opening day of Jio Platforms' IPO, which seeks to raise Rs 30,213 crore, Kamath highlighted that the number of unique investors in India has surged from approximately 2 crore in 2016 to over 13 crore today. He emphasized that Jio's affordable data services have played a crucial role in this dramatic increase.
Reflecting on the past, Kamath recalled his surprise at being named one of the top ten businessmen to watch in 2016, alongside Mukesh Ambani. At that time, Zerodha had just introduced a zero-brokerage model, which disrupted traditional brokerage practices. Kamath noted that without the digital infrastructure provided by Jio and Airtel, many online businesses, including Zerodha, would not have achieved their current scale.
Kamath's comments underscore the broader implications of Jio's entry into the market, which has not only facilitated the growth of individual investors but has also contributed to the expansion of the Indian capital markets post-COVID. He stated that the digital connectivity brought by these telecom giants has enabled a new generation of businesses to thrive, fundamentally altering the economic landscape.
As Jio Platforms sets a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share for its IPO, expectations are high for its success. The IPO is set to close on October 23, with shares expected to be listed on the NSE and BSE by October 28. The funds raised are intended primarily for repaying debts of Reliance Jio Infocomm, further solidifying the company's financial standing in the competitive telecom sector.
Looking ahead, Kamath refrained from advising potential investors on whether to subscribe to the IPO, instead focusing on the importance of the digital infrastructure that has enabled such growth. He concluded by reminding stakeholders of the interconnectedness of business success and the foundational support provided by companies like Jio and Airtel.
