Muslim Youths Establish BJP Office in Nandigram Ahead of Bypolls
Local Muslim youths set up a BJP office in Nandigram following CM Suvendu Adhikari's appeal for friendship with minority voters.
A temporary BJP office was inaugurated in Sarberia, Nandigram.
CM Suvendu Adhikari urged minority voters to support BJP ahead of the Oct 6 bypolls.
The office marks a significant shift in local political dynamics, traditionally dominated by Trinamool Congress.
In a notable political development, local Muslim youths in Sarberia, Nandigram, have established a temporary BJP office just a day after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari called on minority voters to foster a 'friendship' with the party in light of the upcoming bypolls on October 6. The office, constructed using bamboo, tarpaulin, and cloth, prominently features portraits of Adhikari and BJP candidate Hasirani Rath.
During a rally addressing voters, Adhikari emphasized the importance of the bypolls in Nandigram and the minority-majority Rejinagar, presenting it as a unique opportunity for minority voters to align with the BJP. He urged, "Will our minority brothers and sisters keep turning their faces away from us?" and designated the polling day as 'Friendship Day,' promising inclusive development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
The newly established office was inaugurated by members of the local minority community, marking it as the first BJP constituency office in Nandigram directly set up by supporters from this demographic. Sanowar Ali Saha, who oversees the office, stated that the initiative was a response to Adhikari's appeal for minority voters to engage with the BJP's development initiatives. Saha, a former Trinamool Congress member and an independent panchayat election winner, noted that local residents were voluntarily supporting the BJP in favor of Adhikari's development agenda.
Sarberia, historically a stronghold for the Trinamool Congress and a significant site in the 2007 anti-land acquisition protests, has approximately 1,700 voters, with around 70% belonging to the minority community. The establishment of the BJP office has generated optimism among residents regarding a potential victory for the party in the upcoming elections.
In contrast, Bengal Congress president Subhankar Sarkar led a rally from Haripur to the Nandigram bus stand, supporting party candidate Milan Pradhan. Pradhan criticized the BJP for allegedly damaging Congress campaign materials out of fear of losing and highlighted ongoing issues with drinking water and healthcare infrastructure in the region.
