Mehrdad Akhlaghi Appointed as Iran's New Defence Minister Amid Escalating Tensions
Mehrdad Akhlaghi has been confirmed as Iran's defence minister, tasked with enhancing military capabilities during a period of heightened conflict.
Mehrdad Akhlaghi was appointed defence minister with 237 votes in favor from parliament.
He brings over 42 years of experience in missile technology and military production.
Akhlaghi's focus will be on expanding Iran's military-industrial capabilities amid ongoing US-Israel tensions.
Mehrdad Akhlaghi Ketabchi has officially taken over as Iran's defence minister, following a parliamentary vote that saw 237 lawmakers support his appointment. This decision comes at a critical juncture as tensions between Iran and the United States escalate, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict that began with the US-Israel war on February 28. Akhlaghi's leadership is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping Iran's military strategy during this tumultuous period.
The recent appointment follows the death of former Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, who was killed alongside other senior officials on the first day of the war. In the interim, Majid Ebn-e Reza filled the position temporarily but will now serve as Akhlaghi's deputy. Akhlaghi's mandate includes the reconstruction and expansion of Iran's military-industrial infrastructure, which has faced significant targeting from US and Israeli forces.
Akhlaghi, 68, has a robust background in ballistic missile technology and military production, having spent over four decades in the Defence Ministry and related organizations. His previous roles include leadership positions at the Shahid Bagheri Industrial Group and the Aerospace Industries Organization. Despite being under US and UN sanctions, Akhlaghi has been instrumental in developing various missile systems and precision-guided munitions, which are crucial for Iran's military capabilities.
The implications of Akhlaghi's appointment extend beyond military logistics; it signals Iran's commitment to enhancing its strategic weaponry, particularly in missiles and drones. Brigadier General Reza Talaei-Nik, a spokesperson for the Defence Ministry, emphasized the need for improved offensive capabilities, asserting that Iran continues to maintain significant military strength despite US claims of its diminished industrial capacity.
Looking ahead, Akhlaghi has outlined his priorities as defence minister, which include accelerating military-industrial development, enhancing air defenses, and fostering international military cooperation. His recent comments suggest a readiness to confront US threats, indicating that Iran is prepared to defend its interests vigorously. As tensions remain high, Akhlaghi's leadership will be closely monitored both domestically and internationally.
