On October 23, 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) addressed ongoing tensions along the India-China border, indicating that disturbances arise when Chinese military forces deviate from their established patrolling patterns. This statement followed inquiries regarding comments made by the Director-General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) about recent confrontations with Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh.
Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson for the MEA, emphasized that both nations are committed to using existing diplomatic and military frameworks to resolve disputes and prevent misunderstandings along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). He reiterated that the situation along the border can become volatile when Chinese forces do not adhere to their usual patrol routes.
During a media briefing, Jaiswal noted that discussions are underway to enhance understanding of the LAC for improved border management. He stressed that maintaining peace and stability in border regions is crucial for the overall development of bilateral relations between India and China. However, he directed specific inquiries regarding the situation to the Ministry of Defence for further details.
The ITBP Director-General, Shatrujeet Kapur, reported on October 22, 2026, that confrontations had occurred at several locations in Arunachal Pradesh, marking the first official acknowledgment of escalating tensions in the northeastern border region since July. Reports indicate that since late July, a standoff has been ongoing at Asaphila near Taksing, with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) establishing positions close to India’s perceived LAC.
In response to these developments, India has reportedly increased its military presence along the border. As both nations navigate this complex situation, the focus remains on diplomatic engagement to mitigate further conflicts and ensure stability in the region.
