U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit Reliance Industries' Jamnagar plant in Gujarat, the largest single-site refinery globally, to discuss potential collaborations in refining energy supplies from the Western Hemisphere. This visit underscores the U.S. government's interest in strengthening ties with Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani's company.
During an interview with India's Network 18, Rubio highlighted the importance of working closely with Reliance to refine energy resources, stating that such collaboration would benefit both India and the U.S. The Jamnagar refinery, with a crude processing capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day, plays a crucial role in India's energy landscape and is pivotal for diversifying its energy supplies.
Rubio noted that Reliance has become the largest buyer of Venezuelan crude outside the U.S. as of late September. He suggested that the refinery's significant capacity could facilitate India's efforts to diversify its energy sources, particularly as Venezuela increases its oil production. The U.S. has been encouraging India to purchase more Venezuelan oil to replace Russian imports, with Reliance leading these efforts.
In addition to oil procurement, Reliance has been enhancing its relationship with the U.S. This year, President Trump announced plans for a new oil refinery in the U.S., supported by investments from Reliance. Although the specifics of this investment remain unconfirmed, it has been described as a historic deal worth $300 billion, marking a significant milestone in U.S.-India energy relations.
Rubio's visit comes at a time when diesel prices in the U.S. are rising, impacting various sectors, including trucking and agriculture. He emphasized Reliance's capability to refine heavy crude and referred to India as a refining superpower, highlighting the potential role of Indian and Chinese refineries in meeting global energy demands, especially for heavy and medium-heavy crude from Venezuela and Russia.
