In a significant development for US-India relations, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States is nearing the finalization of a trade agreement with India. This statement was made ahead of his scheduled meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon.
Rubio's remarks come as the two nations navigate complex issues surrounding energy procurement, particularly India's ongoing purchases of Russian oil and gas. While addressing these concerns, Rubio emphasized the need for a balanced approach to sanctions, highlighting that the US must consider the broader implications of its policies on global energy supplies and prices. He stated, "We can’t unravel the economy of other countries because of one central issue," underscoring the intricate dynamics involved in foreign policy decisions.
The ongoing trade negotiations have seen progress, with Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently announcing that the first tranche of the bilateral trade agreement has been finalized and is currently undergoing legal drafting. Goyal expressed optimism about completing the agreement soon, which aims to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries. This development is seen as a crucial step towards strengthening the strategic partnership between India and the US.
Rubio also raised concerns about global supply chain dependencies, advocating for diversification to avoid over-reliance on any single country or region for essential goods. He remarked, "It’s just not smart for the whole world to depend on one place for 100% of anything," emphasizing the need for resilience in global trade practices.
As Rubio continues his visit in India, he is set to pay tribute to the victims of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and participate in celebrations for American Independence Day. His itinerary includes a departure to Jamnagar on Wednesday morning, where he will engage in further diplomatic activities, highlighting the ongoing commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between the US and India.
