US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on a two-day diplomatic mission to India, has sought to alleviate concerns regarding the Trump administration's tariffs and visa restrictions. He asserted that these measures are not designed to penalize India or any specific country. His comments come amidst ongoing negotiations for a trade agreement between the US and India, which he believes is close to finalization.
Rubio's visit, taking place on October 20-21, marks his second trip to India this year. He highlighted that the trade deal, which has been in discussion for over a year and a half, is now just weeks away from being finalized. He expressed optimism about the negotiations, stating that 99% of the work has been completed and that the trajectory of the discussions is positive.
Addressing the issue of US tariffs, Rubio acknowledged that the potential imposition of tariffs on nations purchasing Russian energy could strain relations with India. However, he reassured that these tariffs are not meant to harm India. He referenced a waiver recently announced by President Trump, indicating that the administration is aware of the importance of maintaining strong ties with India amid geopolitical tensions.
On the topic of visa restrictions, Rubio responded to concerns regarding the Trump administration's immigration policies, which some perceive as antagonistic towards Indian nationals. He clarified that the changes are part of a broader reform of the US immigration system, which has been neglected for two decades. He emphasized that these reforms are not specifically directed at India, noting that complaints about visa processes are common from various countries.
Looking ahead, Rubio's discussions with Indian officials included key areas such as trade, defense, technology, and energy security. As both nations continue to strengthen their strategic partnership, the anticipated trade deal and ongoing reforms in immigration policy are expected to play significant roles in shaping future relations between the US and India.
