French President Emmanuel Macron has declared that individuals intending to create chaos during the upcoming protests against the escalating cost of living will not be permitted to do so. Speaking in Doha after a meeting with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Macron emphasized the importance of maintaining order and stated that he would consult with French intelligence services ahead of the planned demonstrations on Saturday.
The backdrop to Macron's remarks includes a significant protest movement across France, where more than half a million people gathered to voice their demands for improved conditions in schools and to protest against high living expenses. The demonstrations have turned violent in certain areas, resulting in over 2,500 arrests and incidents of looting, prompting Macron to assert that he would implement all necessary measures to restore calm and security.
Macron also criticized comments from foreign leaders regarding the protests, labeling them as “unacceptable and even stupid.” He pointed out that some leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have made statements suggesting that the protests are linked to immigration and extremism, without providing any substantiated evidence. Macron's remarks reflect his frustration with external political figures attempting to leverage the situation for their own agendas.
In light of the ongoing unrest, the French government is preparing for future protests, with Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announcing a significant increase in security measures. This includes a “massive deployment” of police forces, supported by military personnel, to ensure public safety during demonstrations. Macron indicated that while a state of emergency is not currently deemed necessary, the government remains vigilant in its efforts to maintain order.
As the situation develops, the French public and authorities are bracing for the upcoming protests, with heightened security measures expected to be in place. The government's response to the protests will likely shape the political landscape in France as citizens continue to express their discontent over living conditions and government policies.
