Unrest in France has led to the looting of luxury items, with reports of stolen goods being sold at drastically reduced prices on the streets.
An estimated €4.25 million in luxury goods has been looted from stores in France.
High-end items, including designer bags and watches, are reportedly being sold at discounts of up to 90%.
The unrest began over educational concerns and escalated into broader protests against living conditions.
In recent unrest across France, luxury goods valued at approximately €4.25 million have been reported stolen from upscale retail outlets. The looting has particularly affected cities such as Paris, Marseille, and Bordeaux, where videos on social media show individuals displaying high-end merchandise believed to have been taken from stores during the riots.
The looted items include designer handbags, perfumes, and cosmetics, with significant losses reported from a Rolex store in Marseille, estimated at €3 million, and a Louis Vuitton store in Bordeaux, which lost about €1.25 million. The scale of the looting has raised alarms regarding the movement of these stolen goods into informal markets, where they are being sold at prices significantly lower than their retail value.
Reports indicate that some sellers are offering these luxury items at discounts of up to 90%. Unverified videos circulating online have showcased individuals flaunting expensive watches and bags, further emphasizing the ongoing issue. However, the authenticity of these items has not been independently verified, leaving questions about their origins.
The unrest has not only targeted luxury stores but has also led to vandalism of public property, with historic buildings and vehicles being damaged. The violence has affected over 2,000 businesses, according to the Chambers of Commerce and Industry. In addition to physical stores, listings of suspected stolen goods have appeared on online resale platforms like Vinted, prompting the platform to take action against such listings.
Initially sparked by student protests over educational issues, the unrest has evolved into a wider movement expressing public discontent over living conditions and inflation. As the situation continues to develop, authorities are likely to implement measures to address both the unrest and the subsequent illegal sales of looted goods.
