In a decisive move to enhance road safety, Kolkata authorities have removed a vibrant paint scheme from several flyover roads after reports of accidents emerged. The decision came swiftly following complaints from motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders, who experienced difficulties navigating the brightly colored surfaces during nighttime driving. The paint, intended to add aesthetic appeal ahead of the festival season, instead contributed to hazardous driving conditions as it became slippery when mixed with rainwater.
The controversial paint was applied to the Gariahat flyover in south Kolkata, the Chingrighata flyover in the east, and other central city locations. Initially, officials claimed that the color scheme adhered to safety guidelines. However, as videos of skidding motorcycles circulated on social media, public outcry over the safety implications intensified, prompting immediate action from the authorities.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has ordered an investigation into the incidents, questioning how accidents occurred despite assurances that the paint possessed anti-skid properties. In the meantime, measures have been taken at the Chingrighata flyover, where reflector blocks have been installed to help regulate vehicle speeds and improve safety.
The fallout from this incident has extended beyond Kolkata, with authorities in Asansol, located approximately 200 kilometers away, taking precautionary measures. They have instructed the removal of similar colorful paint from flyover roads in their jurisdiction to prevent any potential accidents.
Looking ahead, the Kolkata administration is expected to reassess its approach to road safety and aesthetic enhancements. The investigation's findings may lead to revised guidelines for road treatments, ensuring that public safety remains the top priority in future urban planning efforts.
