In a tragic incident in Kochi, Kerala, a 55-year-old man named Jayabalakrishnan lost his life when a Mercedes Benz, allegedly driven by a 17-year-old boy, collided with his scooter in the early hours of Sunday. The accident occurred between 2 AM and 3 AM, leaving the victim dead at the scene. Eyewitness accounts and video footage from the site revealed the car's front end severely damaged, indicating the force of the impact.
Preliminary investigations by the police have confirmed that the luxury vehicle was registered under the name of a judicial officer. Authorities stated that the young driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, although blood samples have been collected for further testing. The police have since charged the minor with reckless driving and causing death due to negligence.
Jayabalakrishnan was reportedly returning home after working at a food stall when the accident occurred. His niece recounted the harrowing details, noting that the impact was so severe that it scattered items from his scooter across the accident scene. "He died on the spot," she told reporters, highlighting the tragic nature of the incident.
The family is seeking justice and accountability, particularly criticizing the behavior of the driver’s father at the police station. The niece expressed her frustration over the lack of respect shown when she questioned why his underage son was allowed to operate the vehicle. She emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of driving regulations, stating, "It should be a lesson to everyone not to drive a vehicle without a license."
As the investigation continues, the police are expected to pursue the case rigorously, given the public interest and the implications surrounding the involvement of a judicial officer's family. The community is left grappling with the loss and the broader issues of road safety and legal accountability for minors behind the wheel.
