Kharge vows to continue protests until Gyanesh Kumar resigns.
Opposition leaders accuse the ruling BJP of electoral manipulation.
The rally emphasizes unity against alleged vote theft and threats to democracy.
At a significant rally held at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on Sunday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge made a bold statement regarding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, asserting that the opposition would persist in its protests until Kumar steps down. Kharge's remarks included a dramatic warning that the INDIA bloc would 'dig him out from the ground if needed,' reflecting the heightened tensions surrounding the upcoming elections.
The rally, part of the INDIA bloc's 'Chalo Dilli' campaign, attracted thousands of supporters and leaders from various opposition parties. Kharge accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of manipulating electoral processes to disenfranchise women, youth, and Dalits. He claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were using central agencies to intimidate opposition voices and undermine democracy.
During his address, Kharge emphasized the need for unity among the people to combat what he described as attempts to steal votes. He urged attendees to rally against the BJP, stating, 'PM Modi will go only when you fight strongly.' The rally also featured RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who criticized Kumar as a 'puppet of Modi' and likened the political struggle to the epic Mahabharata, suggesting that the opposition was engaged in a battle against electoral manipulation.
The event saw participation from prominent leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and Mamata Banerjee, all of whom echoed Kharge's sentiments regarding the alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls and the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The opposition has called for an immediate halt to this process, claiming it has resulted in widespread voter omissions.
In anticipation of the rally, security measures were significantly heightened across central Delhi, with traffic restrictions implemented to accommodate the large influx of supporters. Many attendees carried banners proclaiming 'Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao,' underscoring the rally's focus on protecting democratic rights and ensuring fair electoral practices.
