Kerala Court Denies Bail to Four in Fatal Mini Cooper Incident
A Kerala court has refused bail to four individuals involved in a deadly Mini Cooper accident that resulted in three fatalities.
The court cited high blood alcohol levels and excessive speed as key factors in the case.
The accused include the driver and three passengers, all facing serious charges.
The court emphasized the need for further investigation into the roles of all accused.
On October 17, 2026, a court in Kerala denied bail to four individuals implicated in a tragic Mini Cooper accident that led to the deaths of three people. Among the accused is 19-year-old Suhail Sajeev, who is alleged to have been driving the vehicle at the time of the incident, which occurred in the early hours of October 11 on the Airport-Athani road.
The court's decision was made by Smt. Samyuktha M.K., a Judicial First Class Magistrate in Angamaly, who dismissed the bail applications of Sajeev and his co-accused, Ninav, Joyal S. Anto, and Ameen Sha. These individuals are accused of various offenses under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, with allegations that they contributed to the crime while being passengers in the car.
Prosecutors presented evidence indicating that Sajeev's blood alcohol concentration was significantly above the legal limit, with readings of 161 mg per 100 ml and a urine alcohol concentration of 230 mg per 100 ml. Additionally, the vehicle was reportedly traveling at speeds exceeding 100 km/h in areas marked for lower speed limits. The court noted that the actual speed at the time of the crash remains to be determined, but the combination of intoxication and speed raises serious concerns regarding culpable homicide versus negligent driving.
The court also highlighted the necessity for further investigation into the involvement of the other accused, suggesting that they were aware of Sajeev's intoxicated state and may have encouraged him to drive recklessly. The defense argued that the circumstances surrounding the crash differed from the prosecution's account, questioning the initial statements and the identification of the driver. They contended that the lack of eyewitness testimony and specific allegations regarding speed should be considered.
Moving forward, the court has mandated that the investigation continue to ascertain the precise roles of all individuals involved in the incident. The next steps will involve gathering more evidence to clarify the circumstances of the accident and the liability of each accused party, as the legal proceedings develop in the coming weeks.
