Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan has publicly condemned remarks made by CPM leader P Nandakumar, who referred to Malappuram district as a 'nest of fundamentalists and communalists'. The comments were made during a CPM district committee meeting attended by senior party officials, including former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Satheesan expressed his disapproval on social media, emphasizing the need for Vijayan and the CPM leadership to address the issue directly.
The controversy stems from Nandakumar's statements, which Satheesan argues reflect a troubling trend of targeting Malappuram and its communities. He stated that such rhetoric, especially when unchallenged by Vijayan, indicates a tacit approval from the CPM. Satheesan described the comments as part of a broader pattern of divisive politics that has been perpetuated by the party, linking it to previous anti-Malappuram sentiments expressed by Vijayan himself.
In his statement, Satheesan called for an unconditional apology from both Nandakumar and the CPM, insisting that the party leadership must clarify their position on the remarks. He criticized the CPM for engaging in what he termed 'dog-whistle politics', suggesting that the party continues to employ polarizing tactics despite facing electoral defeats.
The backlash against Nandakumar's comments has been swift, with members of the Muslim Youth League filing police complaints against him at the Ponnani police station. Authorities have indicated that they will review video evidence from the meeting before proceeding with any legal action. This incident has sparked further discussions about communal harmony and political rhetoric in Kerala.
In response to the controversy, Thavanur MLA VS Joy defended Malappuram, asserting that it is a 'palace of jewels stitched together by secular minds', countering the negative portrayal made by Nandakumar. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions in Kerala's political landscape, particularly regarding communal relations. As the political fallout continues, it remains to be seen how the CPM will respond and whether any actions will be taken against Nandakumar.
