In a deeply troubling incident, the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has opened a suo motu case following the death of a two-year-old boy named Rahul, who reportedly succumbed to malnutrition in Karthikappally. The child passed away on Sunday morning, and a postmortem examination revealed he suffered from severe anaemia and weighed only 7.5 kg, significantly lower than the expected weight of 12 kg for his age.

Commission member T C Jalaja Mol took action based on media reports, prompting the Commission to request explanations from several local authorities, including the District Medical Officer and the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) supervisor. This case has raised serious concerns about the welfare of children in the region and the responsibilities of local officials in safeguarding their health.

Women and Child Development Minister Bindu Krishna expressed her shock and distress over the incident, highlighting that panchayat and health officials had previously intervened by taking the children to Gandhi Bhavan, a care center in Pathanapuram. However, the parents later removed them from the facility. Reports suggest that parental neglect may have played a role in the child's tragic fate, as the couple had already lost another child and have four surviving daughters aged between three and 12.

Authorities are currently awaiting a pathology report related to Rahul's death, which will guide further investigations. Police have indicated that all individuals involved will be questioned as part of the inquiry. Minister Krishna stressed that this incident should serve as a wake-up call for Kerala, underlining the importance of prioritizing children's welfare, especially when parents are unable or unwilling to provide adequate care.

Approximately a month prior to this incident, officials had made efforts to ensure that Thara, Rahul's mother, received necessary medical care during her pregnancy, and that her children were given appropriate attention. Unfortunately, these attempts were unsuccessful, culminating in this tragic outcome. The community and local authorities are now faced with the urgent need to address the systemic issues that allowed such a situation to arise.
