Kashmiri Pandit Activist Rakesh Handu Arrested for Cyberterrorism
Rakesh Handu's arrest in Faridabad raises concerns among the Kashmiri Pandit community, prompting calls for a fair investigation.
Rakesh Handu was arrested on October 17 in connection with a cyberterrorism case.
The case involves allegations of sharing electronic material linked to a militant group.
Community leaders are demanding transparency and fairness in the investigation.
Rakesh Handu, a Kashmiri Pandit activist known as Bunty, was apprehended by Jammu and Kashmir Police on October 17 in Faridabad, Haryana. His arrest relates to a cyberterrorism case filed under the IT Act at the Baramulla Police Station, following a complaint from a local government employee. The FIR, registered on September 12, cites violations under Sections 66F and 84C of the Information Technology Act.
The allegations against Handu involve the distribution of electronic content through a social media account, purportedly associated with the Resistance United Liberation Council (RULC). Police documents indicate that the material was shared multiple times online, leading to the charges. Handu was informed of his legal rights during the arrest, including access to legal counsel and the option to seek bail.
Prior to his arrest, Handu reportedly received a notice from investigators directing him to appear for questioning, which he failed to do, citing security concerns that prevented him from traveling to Kashmir. He had requested to participate in the investigation via video conferencing, emphasizing the threats he faced.
The arrest has sparked significant concern within the Kashmiri Pandit community, with leaders like Sanjay Saraf from the Lok Janshakti Party advocating for a fair legal process. Saraf expressed that the allegations should be thoroughly examined while ensuring Handu's rights and dignity are upheld. He noted that the community values justice and hopes for a transparent investigation.
While police have not released an official statement regarding the arrest, sources indicate that it is part of a larger inquiry into threats made against Kashmiri Pandits in recent months. Authorities maintain that the investigation is being conducted lawfully, assuring that no innocent individuals will be harmed during the process.
