Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas has formally requested intervention from President Droupadi Murmu and Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi as the hunger strike by students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) reaches its 17th day. The strike, which commenced on October 3, 2026, has raised alarms regarding the health of the participants, prompting Brittas to take action on October 18.
In his correspondence, Brittas highlighted the urgent need to revoke rustication orders against elected representatives of the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) and to withdraw contentious provisions from the Chief Proctor's Office Manual. He expressed concern that the administration's inaction on students' legitimate grievances has led to this drastic measure by the student body.
Brittas, a former JNU student himself, stated that the university has historically been a platform for open debate and dissent, and he criticized the administration for suppressing student voices. He noted that the exclusion of elected representatives undermines the students' ability to collectively address their concerns, which is vital for the functioning of the union.
The MP also pointed out the implications of the CPO Manual, which imposes fines and disciplinary actions for various forms of protest. He warned that such measures could deter students from voicing their legitimate issues, particularly those related to gender justice, equal opportunity, and campus facilities. The ongoing hunger strike has intensified these concerns, as the health risks to the participants grow.
Brittas referenced the Jawaharlal Nehru University Act of 1966, which enshrines principles of social justice and democracy within the institution. He urged President Murmu to utilize her authority under Section 8 of the Act to take necessary actions to address the situation, including the revocation of rustication orders and the resolution of outstanding student grievances.
