Jio Platforms Aims for ₹302 Billion in India's Largest IPO
Mukesh Ambani's Jio Platforms is set to launch India's largest-ever IPO, targeting a valuation of ₹10.3 trillion despite market challenges.
Jio Platforms plans to raise up to ₹302 billion in its IPO.
The company has secured 212 anchor investors, including major global funds.
Shares will be available to retail investors starting Wednesday, with the IPO closing on Friday.
Mukesh Ambani, India's second-richest individual, is poised to launch what could be the largest initial public offering (IPO) in the nation's history. Jio Platforms, a telecom company based in Mumbai and supported by tech giants Meta and Google, aims to raise as much as ₹302 billion while targeting a valuation of ₹10.3 trillion when it begins trading on the stock market starting Wednesday.
Founded a decade ago as a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, Jio Platforms has transformed the telecommunications landscape in India by providing affordable broadband services to millions. Under the leadership of Akash Ambani, Mukesh's eldest son, Jio has quickly gained a substantial market presence. The company has already attracted 212 anchor investors, including renowned global asset managers such as BlackRock, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and Fidelity Investments, ahead of its highly anticipated IPO.
The IPO will open to retail investors on Wednesday and is scheduled to close on Friday. Reliance Industries has announced a share price range of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 for this initial offering, with plans to issue up to 270 million new shares. To encourage employee participation, Reliance is offering a discount of ₹54 per share to its workforce of over 400,000.
If Jio achieves its top valuation target, it will become India's fourth-largest company, surpassing notable firms like Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank. This valuation is significantly higher than the ₹4.9 trillion valuation recorded in 2020 when Meta and Google invested in Jio. However, it falls short of earlier expectations that anticipated a valuation exceeding $110 billion when the company filed its draft prospectus last summer. This IPO comes amid a broader downturn in the Indian stock market, with the Nifty 50 index experiencing a decline of over 12% this year.
Since launching its telecom services in September 2016, Jio has rapidly expanded its subscriber base, reaching 100 million users within just 170 days. The company is credited with making mobile internet more accessible in India, sparking a price war among telecom providers. Looking ahead, Jio plans to diversify its offerings into artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure. Isha Ambani, a board member at Jio, shared that the idea for Jio stemmed from her and Akash's frustrations with poor internet connectivity during their return to India from the US around 2009-10, leading to the vision of a robust digital technology platform.
