The tragic case of Himashri Boro, a 20-year-old student from Assam, has drawn significant attention following her mysterious death after allegedly facing harassment during a train journey. On October 6, while traveling alone on the Vivek Express from Visakhapatnam to Guwahati, Boro went missing. Her body was later found beside railway tracks in Andhra Pradesh, prompting calls for intervention from political leaders, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.
Boro had traveled to Andhra Pradesh to perform with an Assamese dance troupe and was returning home when she made a distress call to her mother around 1:30 AM, expressing fear due to the presence of several young men. Her last words to her mother were, "Maa, I am scared," before the call abruptly ended. Despite her mother’s attempts to comfort her and suggest seeking help from the railway conductor, Boro's disappearance became a grim reality when her belongings were found in her train compartment but she was nowhere to be found.
Following the discovery of her body, Gogoi and Sarma reached out to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, urging for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Boro's death. The Andhra Pradesh police have initiated inquiries, including reviewing CCTV footage from the station and tracking her last phone signals. Investigators are also examining whether her death was accidental or if foul play was involved, as her family suspects.
The implications of this incident extend beyond Boro's family, raising serious concerns about the safety of women traveling alone on trains in India. The case has highlighted alarming statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau, which reported numerous offenses against women and children, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures on public transport. Political leaders are calling for immediate action to ensure that such incidents do not recur and that justice is served for Boro's family.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are expected to provide updates on the findings and any legal actions that may arise. The post-mortem examination of Boro has been completed, and her body has been returned to her family. The public and political figures alike are closely monitoring the situation, demanding accountability and justice for the young woman whose life was tragically cut short.
