BJP claims over 4,000 duplicate entries exist in the electoral rolls.
In a surprising turn of events, the Uttar Pradesh voter list for the upcoming Legislative Council elections has come under scrutiny due to bizarre names such as 'Ram Ne Yadav Ko Mara' and 'Murkhchand Yadav'. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated an inquiry following widespread social media reactions and allegations of inaccuracies in the electoral rolls.
The controversy began in Prayagraj, where Dr. Man Singh Yadav, a candidate from the Samajwadi Party, raised concerns about errors in the voter slips for the Allahabad-Jhansi graduate constituency. He pointed out that some slips incorrectly listed 'B.Com' in the father's name column and included absurd names that led to questions about the credibility of the electoral process. Yadav's complaint to the district magistrate has prompted the ECI to take action.
In response to the allegations, the Election Commission has requested a report from the Jhansi divisional commissioner, who is responsible for electoral registration in the constituency. The report is expected to clarify the unusual names that have circulated online. Other names reported include 'Takkar Marna' and 'Mohammad Pagal Rehan', although the authenticity of these entries remains unverified.
The implications of these irregularities extend beyond mere embarrassment, as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also filed complaints regarding the presence of 4,397 duplicate entries in the voter list. The BJP's claims specify that a significant number of these duplicates are concentrated in Prayagraj and other districts, raising concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. The party has called for an investigation and the removal of these entries.
As the state prepares for voting on October 23 for 11 Legislative Council seats, including five graduate and six teacher constituencies, the Election Commission is under pressure to ensure the accuracy of the electoral rolls. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav are both actively campaigning, underscoring the importance of a fair electoral process. The ECI has pledged to investigate all complaints regarding the voter lists thoroughly, with a focus on maintaining the integrity of the upcoming elections.
