In a recent advisory, Indian Railways has reiterated its stance against the use of speaker mode on mobile devices while on trains and railway premises. The directive aims to maintain a peaceful environment for all passengers, urging individuals to utilize earphones and keep conversations at a low volume. This initiative comes as part of a broader effort to enhance the travel experience, particularly in air-conditioned coaches where noise can be particularly disruptive.

The Southern Railway has taken proactive measures by instructing its divisions to disseminate information regarding these rules through public announcements and notices at stations. Ticket examiners have been empowered to take action against those who violate these regulations. The advisory references Section 145 (2) (a) of the Railways Act, which has been updated under the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.

According to officials, using mobile phones in speaker mode or engaging in loud conversations can lead to removal from railway premises and a fine of Rs 1,000. Continued non-compliance after receiving a warning may result in up to six months of imprisonment and/or a fine of Rs 5,000. This stringent approach aims to deter disruptive behavior that inconveniences fellow travelers, especially in quieter settings.

Despite earlier efforts dating back to 2012 to curb this behavior, the issue has persisted, prompting renewed focus following recent legislative amendments. Frequent travelers have reported instances of passengers watching videos and playing music loudly, often without headphones, which disrupts the travel experience for others. Railway officials are now appealing for cooperation from passengers to adhere to basic etiquette while traveling.

In light of rising incidents of disturbances, Indian Railways encourages passengers to remain vigilant and report any ongoing issues to railway staff or through the RailMadad portal. Authorities recommend the use of earphones for audio playback, keeping phone calls brief, and maintaining a moderate volume during conversations to ensure a pleasant journey for everyone involved.
