Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot, faced a life-threatening situation on September 30 while operating Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Initially believing he had been struck by debris, Machchhar soon realized he was under attack from his co-pilot, who allegedly used a crash axe in the cockpit. The incident transformed a routine flight into a desperate struggle for survival, as Machchhar fought to protect himself and regain control of the aircraft.
The flight had been proceeding normally until approximately two hours in, when the co-pilot requested to pray and asked another captain to leave the cockpit. This request, while not unusual, preceded the violent attack that left Machchhar with severe injuries. He described the moment of impact as a “very hard hit” to the back of his head, which caused him to lose consciousness intermittently during the ordeal. Despite the chaos, he managed to call for help and attempted to open the cockpit door, which was crucial in allowing other crew members to intervene.
Machchhar's quick thinking and determination were pivotal in the incident. After sustaining injuries, he recalled the engines slowing down and the aircraft entering a dive. His experience as a pilot allowed him to recognize the aircraft's distress signals without relying solely on instruments. He vividly remembered the struggle to keep the cockpit door open and the subsequent intervention by other pilots, who successfully diverted the flight to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.
The aftermath of the attack has drawn significant attention, with investigations ongoing into the co-pilot's motives, which reportedly included plans to crash the plane into the terminal at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport. The Indian Embassy in the UAE confirmed that Machchhar was recovering well after receiving medical treatment in both Saudi Arabia and the UAE. His bravery has been acknowledged by global leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who commended his actions during the crisis.
Looking ahead, the investigation into the attempted hijacking continues, with authorities working to understand the full scope of the incident. Machchhar expressed gratitude for the support he received from medical staff and the UAE government, emphasizing the collective determination of everyone on board to survive. His story serves as a testament to human resilience in the face of danger, and he remains committed to sharing his experience as a reminder of the importance of survival instincts in critical situations.
