In a significant move, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India has issued a directive to satellite television channels, urging them to refrain from broadcasting anti-national content and to exercise caution regarding the coverage of sensitive topics. This advisory, released on Wednesday, emphasizes the need for channels to comply with the Programme Code established under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act of 1995 and its associated rules.
The ministry highlighted that there have been multiple instances where private satellite channels failed to adhere to these regulations, particularly during live broadcasts of anti-terror operations and violent incidents. The advisory was prompted by observations made during a meeting of the Inter-Departmental Committee (IDC), which noted a trend of similar content being aired across various channels. The IDC has recommended strict compliance with the statutory provisions governing broadcast content to prevent the normalization of inappropriate behavior or language in media.
The guidelines issued cover a wide range of topics, including the reporting of crimes, natural disasters, and the protection of sensitive information, such as the identities of sexual assault victims. The ministry specifically stressed that programs, especially live debates and discussions, should not promote communal or anti-national sentiments. This directive aims to ensure that television content remains responsible and does not incite discord among communities.
In addition to content regulations, broadcasters are advised to exercise caution when utilizing artificial intelligence in their programming. The ministry has indicated that AI tools should be used in a supportive capacity and must not compromise the accuracy or sensitivity of news reporting. This includes the use of generative AI for graphics and virtual presentations, which should enhance rather than detract from the integrity of the news.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has called on broadcasters to strengthen their editorial processes and regularly train their staff involved in news production and transmission. Non-compliance with these guidelines could lead to repercussions under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, underscoring the government's commitment to maintaining standards in broadcast media.
