On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States and India are nearing a trade agreement after more than a year of negotiations. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump expressed optimism, stating, "They want to make a deal. We’re going to make a deal. Pretty close, yeah." His comments come as both nations show increasing enthusiasm regarding the long-awaited agreement.
The optimism surrounding the trade deal was echoed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his visit to India, where he described the negotiations as 'incredibly close.' Rubio and India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in extensive discussions in Mumbai, focusing on the broader scope of India-US relations and emphasizing the urgency of concluding the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
The meeting occurred during the US Freedom 250 Reception hosted by US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that the talks addressed critical strategic areas, including trade, defense, technology, and energy security. The MEA highlighted the progress made in the BTA negotiations and reiterated both countries' commitment to finalizing the agreement soon.
Rubio's visit, which runs from October 20 to 21 at Jaishankar's invitation, marks his second trip to India this year. Following his discussions in Mumbai, he plans to visit Jamnagar in Gujarat to explore enhanced energy cooperation. During his address at the Freedom 250 Reception, Rubio characterized the strategic partnership between India and the US as 'extraordinary,' emphasizing that while differences may arise, shared interests can significantly influence global geopolitics and trade.
As negotiations progress, both Indian and US officials have expressed optimism about reaching an agreement after a prolonged period of stalled talks. Last week, Ambassador Gor indicated that major issues had been resolved, while Jaishankar expressed encouragement regarding the advancements in discussions. Despite the positive outlook, both sides have acknowledged that all details must be finalized before any formal announcement of the agreement can be made.
