The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts in Tamil Nadu, starting October 25. This includes areas such as Chennai, Coimbatore, and Thanjavur, where significant rainfall is anticipated over the weekend. The IMD's warning indicates that the southern interiors of Tamil Nadu may experience intensified weather conditions, potentially escalating into a cyclonic storm by Monday.
The forecast comes in the wake of a low-pressure area that has formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal, which is expected to develop into a depression and subsequently a cyclonic storm. This system is predicted to move towards the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts, prompting precautionary measures in these regions as well.
In Kerala, a red alert has been issued for five districts, including Malappuram and Kozhikode, due to the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall on October 25 and 26. The IMD has also placed several other districts under orange and yellow alerts, indicating the potential for very heavy and heavy rainfall, respectively. Local authorities are preparing for possible flooding and landslides, urging residents to remain vigilant.
The impact of these weather conditions is expected to be widespread, affecting not only Tamil Nadu and Kerala but also neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The Odisha government has already announced the closure of schools and colleges in anticipation of the cyclone, aiming to ensure public safety and minimize casualties. The situation is being closely monitored as the weather system develops.
Looking ahead, residents in the affected areas are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and heed warnings from local authorities. The IMD will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves, with significant rainfall expected to persist through the weekend and into early next week.
