On October 21, 2026, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry issued a directive to television news channels, emphasizing the need to refrain from promoting communal discord or anti-national sentiments. The advisory underscores the importance of taking corrective measures against any abusive or inflammatory remarks made during broadcasts, while also advocating for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in news reporting.
The advisory highlights that the Inter-Departmental Committee (IDC) has noted instances where certain broadcasts did not comply with the established rules. It stresses that inappropriate language and behavior should not be normalized in media presentations. Additionally, the Ministry has prohibited live coverage of anti-terror operations, mandating that such events should only be reported through periodic updates from authorized personnel until the operations conclude.
Channels are urged to exercise caution when airing graphic or disturbing content, ensuring that such visuals do not violate standards of good taste or cause undue distress to viewers. The advisory calls for accurate, balanced, and responsible reporting, warning against the dissemination of falsehoods or misleading information, particularly in crime and violence reporting. Sensationalism and the glorification of unlawful conduct are to be strictly avoided.
Moreover, the Ministry has instructed channels to utilize only authentic maps of India as published by the Survey of India in their broadcasts. The advisory also emphasizes the importance of maintaining editorial control by carefully selecting participants for discussions and taking immediate action to prevent the airing of derogatory or inflammatory content. This includes muting, issuing disclaimers, or even discontinuing feeds when necessary.
Looking ahead, the Ministry has called for broadcasters to enhance their editorial and content-review processes, ensuring that all personnel involved in news production are adequately trained on compliance with the Programme Code. The advisory warns that any violations could lead to penalties under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, reinforcing the need for accountability in broadcasting practices.
