The Meteorological Department has forecasted significant rainfall across Chennai and neighboring districts, including Tiruchi and Coimbatore, expected to occur on October 19, 2026. This weather event is anticipated to be accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h.
The active phase of the Northeast monsoon has already led to rainfall in various regions of Tamil Nadu. A trough extending from Lakshadweep to the west-central Bay of Bengal has been identified, influencing weather patterns across the state. The department noted that an upper air circulation is present over north-interior Karnataka, contributing to the current weather conditions.
In addition to Chennai, heavy rain is predicted for several districts, including Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Thoothukudi. The Meteorological Department has indicated that isolated areas may experience very heavy rainfall, particularly on October 19. Alerts have been issued to the public, urging caution due to the potential for severe weather.
The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) has taken proactive measures in response to the forecast, mobilizing 1.40 lakh personnel, including government officials and volunteers, to assist in disaster preparedness. Additionally, 250 boats and their crews are on standby for potential rescue operations in flood-prone areas.
