Finance Minister's comments on stakeholder engagement may boost investor sentiment in the long run.
Foreign investors sold shares worth ₹1,305 crore, while domestic investors bought shares worth ₹2,439 crore.
Indian stock markets are bracing for a challenging opening on Wednesday, with GIFT Nifty indicating a decline of 98 points, or 0.43%, settling at 22,752.5. This negative cue suggests that Dalal Street may experience a downturn despite a recent recovery in equities, where the Nifty had previously surged by 434 points to close at 22,722, buoyed by positive remarks from Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The recent uptick in the Indian equity market was largely attributed to the Finance Minister's assurance that the government is open to discussing stakeholder perspectives on the long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax. While no formal proposals have been announced, analysts believe that any potential changes could significantly enhance investor confidence and participation in the equity markets.
In the technical analysis, market observers note that a movement above the 22,600 mark could lead to a further pullback towards levels of 22,800 and 23,100. Conversely, failure to surpass this threshold may indicate a period of corrective consolidation within the range of 22,200 to 22,600. The India VIX, which gauges market volatility, decreased by 7.4% to settle at 14.12, reflecting a slight easing of market fears.
On the global front, Asian markets showed signs of recovery, rebounding from two days of losses as investors speculated that the Federal Reserve might not need to implement aggressive interest rate hikes in the upcoming year. However, US stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the Nasdaq facing losses primarily due to declines in chip stocks. Meanwhile, gold prices remained stable as traders awaited crucial US consumer price data.
Looking ahead, market participants will be keenly observing upcoming economic indicators and central bank signals that could influence market dynamics. The rupee has appreciated against the dollar for the third consecutive session, closing at 95.36, supported by measures from the Reserve Bank of India aimed at stabilizing the currency. As the market opens, investors will be vigilant about the ongoing trends in foreign and domestic investments, which will play a critical role in shaping market sentiment in the days to come.
