Banerjee claims police used for political gain
The Kolkata Police have initiated a suo motu FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly violating a Calcutta High Court order during a rally of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) students' wing. The court had allowed the celebration of the TMCP foundation day on August 28 but mandated that one flank of the event must remain open, which the police claim was not adhered to.
According to police reports, the event exceeded the time limit set by the court, prompting the filing of the FIR at Hastings Police Station. Banerjee, addressing the rally, criticized the ruling BJP for using police to instill fear and asserted her commitment to protect her supporters from police excesses. She also expressed her intention to conduct public meetings without seeking prior permissions from the administration.
