The Election Commission of India has initiated an inquiry into irregularities found in the electoral roll for the Legislative Council elections in Uttar Pradesh, which took place on October 23, 2026. This decision follows the emergence of peculiar names and details on the voter list, which have sparked significant discussion on social media platforms.

Among the bizarre entries were names such as 'Ram ne Yadav ko maara' and 'Ram ne Sharma ko maara', alongside inappropriate details like 'B.Com' listed as a voter's father's name. These discrepancies were primarily identified in the voter list for the Allahabad graduate constituency, raising concerns just before the polling day.

According to a statement from the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh, this was the first time that an online registration system was implemented for adding names to the voter list. The official acknowledged that mistakes can occur during such processes, noting that out of 14,81,310 entries, 158 were flagged for having unusual names. The software intended to transliterate English names into Hindi, but errors in the system led to incorrect translations. For instance, the phrase 'Ram hit Yadav' was improperly rendered, leading to confusion.

The responsibility for maintaining the accuracy of the voter list lies with the Divisional Commissioner, who serves as the Electoral Registration Officer, and the District Officer, acting as the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer. The Election Commission has formally requested explanations from these officials regarding the errors and has instructed district officers to ensure that voters are not adversely affected by these discrepancies.

The Legislative Council elections encompassed five graduate constituencies—Lucknow, Agra, Meerut, Varanasi, and Allahabad-Jhansi—and six teachers' constituencies, covering over 30 districts in Uttar Pradesh, with more than 14 lakh voters participating. As the commission moves forward with its investigation, it aims to rectify these issues to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
