Delhi Police has formally requested an extension of the deployment of 273 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in the national capital until October 20, 2026. This request comes in light of intelligence reports indicating the likelihood of escalated protests and potential law-and-order challenges at critical locations across Delhi.

In a letter dated October 12, 2026, directed to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Office of the Special Commissioner of Police, Operations, emphasized the need for continued security arrangements. The MHA had previously sanctioned a total of 301 CAPF companies for deployment until October 12, with 221 companies approved on October 6 and an additional 80 on October 8.

The police's request is driven by concerns that protests organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and other groups may intensify, particularly regarding calls for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner of India. Demonstrations are anticipated at significant sites such as Jantar Mantar and the Election Commission headquarters, with the potential for large gatherings near sensitive areas including Parliament House and India Gate.

The letter also highlights the risk of participation from various political factions, including the Bhim Army and student unions, which could exacerbate the situation. The police have pointed out that maintaining a robust presence of CAPF personnel is crucial for rapid response to any emerging security threats.

As of the date of the letter, 28 companies from the additional 80 sanctioned for deployment had not yet reported to Delhi Police. The request for an extension aims to ensure that adequate security measures are in place to manage any potential escalation in protests, although it remains uncertain whether the MHA has approved this request.
