In a significant escalation of tensions at Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi Police have initiated an investigation following a complaint from the university administration regarding unauthorized access to the campus. This action comes as student protests demanding the restoration of student union elections enter their 14th consecutive day, with hundreds of students and alumni participating in demonstrations despite the university's decision to transition classes online and restrict access to campus facilities.
The protests have been marked by students gathering near Gate No. 7, where they raised slogans and displayed placards urging the university to reopen its gates. The situation intensified on Friday when several individuals, including two Members of Parliament, allegedly entered the campus without permission, leading to chaos and a police response. While some individuals were detained, no specific suspects have been named in the First Information Report (FIR).
In addition to the trespassing allegations, police have also included charges related to defacement after “objectionable” graffiti appeared on university walls. This graffiti featured messages such as “Free Kashmir” and “Free Sharjeel Imam,” along with slogans critical of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Protesters have distanced themselves from the graffiti, asserting they are not responsible for the messages.
As part of the investigation, police are reviewing CCTV footage from both the campus and surrounding areas to identify those involved in the defacement. The authorities aim to clarify the events that transpired and determine accountability. Meanwhile, security measures have been heightened around the university to prevent further incidents and maintain order amid the ongoing protests.
The agitation, which began on October 12, has seen students engage in a hunger strike alongside their protests, emphasizing their demands for the restoration of the student union and elections. As the situation develops, the university community remains on high alert, awaiting further actions from both the administration and law enforcement.
