In a decisive move to tackle air pollution, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav has announced a ban on all construction and demolition activities across the National Capital Region (NCR) from November 5 to November 20. This initiative aims to mitigate the seasonal spike in pollution as winter approaches, a time when air quality typically deteriorates.
The directive follows a concerning trend in air quality, with levels remaining in the 'Poor' category in recent days. The Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded values exceeding 200, indicating unhealthy air conditions. However, a recent spell of rainfall has temporarily improved the situation, lowering the AQI to 133, classified as 'Moderate' by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Yadav underscored the importance of strict adherence to the ban by all relevant agencies, emphasizing that this measure is vital for improving air quality in the region. The ban is part of a series of actions being implemented to address the annual increase in pollution levels during the winter months, which often sees a rise in respiratory issues among residents.
The recent rainfall, which brought cooler temperatures and a shift in weather patterns, has provided a brief respite from pollution. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously issued a yellow alert for Delhi and surrounding areas, predicting rain and thunderstorms, which have since occurred, leading to significant changes in local weather conditions.
Looking ahead, the government plans to monitor air quality closely during the ban period and may implement further measures if necessary. The construction ban is a critical step in the ongoing efforts to ensure cleaner air for residents of Delhi-NCR as winter progresses, with the potential for additional regulations based on air quality assessments in the coming weeks.
