Rajesh Kumar Singh's term as Defence Secretary extended by one year.
New end date set for October 31, 2027, following Cabinet approval.
Singh has been in the role since November 1, 2024.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has officially extended the tenure of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh for an additional year, now set to conclude on October 31, 2027. This decision was made public on October 24, 2026, and allows Mr. Singh to continue in his position beyond the original end date of October 31, 2026.
Rajesh Kumar Singh, a 1989-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, took over the role of Defence Secretary on November 1, 2024. He succeeded Giridhar Aramane, who retired after serving in the position for two years. Singh's appointment as Officer on Special Duty (Defence Secretary-designate) began earlier on August 20, 2024, marking his entry into the high-profile role.
The extension of Singh's tenure was facilitated under the provisions of FR 65(d) and Rule 16 (1A) of the All India Service (Death-Cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. This adjustment reflects the government's ongoing strategy to ensure stability within the Defence Ministry during a critical period.
The implications of this extension are significant for the Defence Ministry, as Singh's leadership will continue to influence key decisions and policies affecting national security. His experience and continuity in the role are expected to provide a steady hand amid evolving challenges in the defence sector.
Looking ahead, the Defence Ministry will likely continue to rely on Singh's expertise as it navigates various strategic initiatives and potential reforms. The extension underscores the government's confidence in Singh's capabilities as they prepare for future developments in defence and security matters.
